Winery of the Week: Firefly Cellars, Hamilton, VA

It was an unusually perfect summer day and it seemed like a wonderful day for our first visit to Firefly Cellars.  We loaded up in the car and checked out one of Loudoun County’s newer child friendly wineries located off Route 9 just outside of the village of Paeonian Springs, near the town of Hamilton, Virginia.  As usual, we chose a weekday at opening time to make our visit (Thursday at noon).

This winery is located next to a residential house, and the driveway splits to lead you into the large, attractive parking area next to a small plot of vines.  The tasting room in located in a well maintained red barn, which houses the  beautifully decorated tasting room.  I was impressed with how helpful, friendly and attentive the staff were during our visit..

Behind the the tasting room is a large deck (no children allowed in the tasting room or on the deck), a family friendly lawn with Adirondack swings and picnic tables, and another pleasant green open space beyond that without tables.  All of the tables had large, easy to use umbrellas that created a lot of shade.  In addition to all of the wonderful, attractive seating there is also a tetherball space in the corner which the children enjoyed playing.

I ordered a self-guided tasting and enjoyed all of my wines.  We also order a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon which was very nice, the Sweet Things Are Made of Cheese tasting board and some chocolates.  The food boards are wrapped and appeared to be prepared at a different location, but are delicious.  The chocolates came from a shop in Leesburg and are also very good.

We stayed about three hours (almost twice our normal stay for these visits) and by the time we had left (a little after 3 PM) there were six different groups present.  There is a surprising amount of seating inside and out, and though the winery covers less land than most in this area it is arranged in way that makes it feels larger than it is.

The views and setting are very pleasant and feel isolated even though the winery is tucked in amongst residential homes.  The main outdoor areas are surround by large tall trees, and behind the outdoors spaces in a horse barn.  Everyone enjoyed their visit here, and we all look forward to returning for good wine, good food, and relaxing with friends and family.
