What a pleasant surprise Perigeaux Vineyards and Winery was! We visited this St. Leonard, MD winery on a steamy Sunday afternoon in July. As it was just after 2 PM on Sunday, I anticipated that there might be a crowd. Instead, we arrived at a tree covered gravel lane lined by grapevines which led us to a completely shaded, and attractively landscaped parking area.
Once out of the car, we were greeted by an extremely attractive open area with nice shaded seating. We had the place almost to ourselves and chose a table before heading into the tasting room. Sarah and I opted for the tasting of the wines made entirely from grapes grown on site. The tasting itself was great and a nice respite after the drive. We really enjoyed being the only ones present and feeling able to ask all of our questions as we sampled the wines and discussed what we tasted in each glass. The wines we sampled were mostly reds, and had a lot of cherry flavors. They were much less bold than the wines we are used to in the Virginia Piedmont region.
After our tasting, we returned to our table with a Pinot Gris and relaxed as the children explored the grounds (at this point we were the only ones there). I was really impressed with all of the interesting seating options, including a tree swing and a double swing. We were really enjoying our time when the rain came, but I can only imagine it would be even more charming to visit in the spring or fall. It would make a perfect picnic or wedding spot. We will be back.
