We recently spent a lovely weekend in Louisa County, Virginia. We shared the weekend with extended family so we had five children (ages 7-14) and six adults. We stayed at a really nice campground called Small Country Campground. Louisa is not a heavily touristed part of Virginia, but we found it very relaxing as well as beautiful. If you are a visitor to our wonderful state, this area will give you what I would consider to be an “authentic” peak into Virginia.
The Mineral Farmer’s Market
On Saturday morning, we wanted to make sure that we didn’t rush as we all were hoping to relax. Our primary “event” for the day was a trip to the Mineral Farmer’s Market. Mineral is a small town located near to our campground and Sarah and I are suckers for a farmer’s market.
This was a big hit with everyone in our group. We were able to pick up some locally grown produce (which was delicious) and some strawberry jam which we brought home (and I am really enjoying). There also were food and craft vendors. The church across the street was open and was encouraging people to use their restroom and buy the $1 hot dogs that they were grilling. It was a really fun atmosphere!
The Sunflower Festival
On Sunday, we were hoping to visit what is said to be Virginia’s largest corn maze at Liberty Mills Farm in Somerset. When we looked into the hours and prices we discovered that this weekend the corn maze was closed and instead they were holding the First Annual Sunflower Festival. Never ones to miss a festival, we gave it a try.
We arrived late morning and it wasn’t very crowded. We had packed a picnic lunch and left it in the car while we took advantage of the hay ride and wandered through the fields of sunflowers. After everyone was satisfied that they had seen all the flowers, we ate our lunch. The highlight for the kids was certainly the ice cream that was churned on site with a tractor engine.
Small Country Campground
After we returned from the Sunflower Festival we wanted to make sure that we took advantage of everything that the campground offered. On Saturday the kids enjoyed the various play areas and the “hey” ride. On Sunday we made sure to take advantage of the rental boats that were available for the lake, the fire truck rides, a repeat of the fire truck ride, some mini-golf, and the kids took in the family movie that night.
The campground offers a combination of campsites for trailers and tents, cabins to rent the range from completely rustic to fully equipped and travel trailers to rent. We stayed in one of the trailers that you can rent. It served it’s purpose and we will return, but they are not fancy.
