This year for Thanksgiving we did something a little bit different (for us). Instead of the entire family leaving at the same time, we split up. Sarah and the kids took a week long break leaving me behind to leave on Wednesday evening. I assumed that on the afternoon before Thanksgiving Dulles Airport would be packed, but for some reason there was a brief lull when I arrived. I breezed through everything and arrived in the terminal about 3 PM. I had two hours before I needed to board my plane and was by myself so I decided that I would give Bar Symon a try. Bar Symon is run by Iron Chef Michael Symon. He started these restaurants because he doesn’t see any reason why you can’t have good food in an airport.
The place was almost full (always a good sign) despite it being just after 3 PM. I got a seat immediately (easy for a single diner) that was facing the walkway of the terminal and began a very relaxing wait for my plane. My server came quickly and I started with a beer. They offer three local beers (and a wide variety of other options), Alewerks, DC Brau and Lost Rhino. I went with a small (14 oz) Alewerks Chesapeake Pale Ale ($7.99) while I reviewed the menu. Since it was early I decided against getting a one of the larger meals. I went with the Bacon Cheeseburger ($11.89) and a Simple Salad ($4.49). By the way – they are famous for their Rosemary Fries but I thought salad was a more responsible choice.
I know that he is a famous chef, but I was honestly shocked by how good the food was. The burger was easily the best I’ve ever had and the salad was fresh and refreshing. It was obvious that it had been freshly prepared. I was completely blown away by the quality of food in this airport restaurant! In addition, the service was prompt but not rushed, I felt very relaxed as I finished my meal, and the total bill was reasonable. Well done Michael Symon! Mission accomplished. If we had another of his restaurants nearby I would certainly patronize it. As is, I just have to hope for another opportunity to dine on Concourse D in Dulles Airport.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Concourse C and D are connected so you can walk from one to the other.
